The UK¡¯s Insolvency Service has started criminal and civil investigations into P&O Ferries¡¯ sacking of 800 workers earlier this month.
The ferry operator suddenly fired 800 seafaring crew on 17 March provoking a storm of protest among politicians and unions.
The Insolvency Service announced on Friday (1 April) that it would be formally investigating the actions of P&O Ferries.
¡°Following its enquiries, the Insolvency Service has commenced formal criminal and civil investigations into the circumstances surrounding the recent redundancies made by P&O Ferries,¡± said the service in a statement.
¡°As these are ongoing investigations, no further comment or information can be provided at this time.¡±
Transport secretary Grant Shapps said on Twitter: ¡°The Insolvency Service has reviewed P&O Ferries¡¯ actions and placed it under criminal investigation for its actions.?
¡°[P&O Ferries chief executive] Peter Hebblethwaite stood before MPs and admitted to breaking the law, and his actions must now be scrutinised.¡±
