The airline said that it would change the layout on its wide-body Boeing aircraft to expand its Premium Comfort Class, KLM¡¯s version of premium economy, which was introduced in 2022.
Currently this cabin ranges between 21 and 28 seats but will be expanded to up to 40 seats, depending on aircraft type. KLM said this could be done ¡°without compromising¡± legroom for passengers.
KLM¡¯s changes will also allow the addition of more seats in economy, as well as two extra seats in World Business Class on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
The airline said it would be able to add the additional seats due to ¡°the new way of working and more efficient loading¡±, which will reduce the number of trolleys needed onboard.
Paul Terstegge, KLM¡¯s executive vice president of inflight services, said: ¡°Our Premium Comfort Class is very well appreciated by passengers and is often fully booked. People want to travel, and the demand for unique and more luxury travel is increasing.
¡°With the modifications we are going to make, we can expand the number of Premium Comfort seats. In addition to making optimal use of the space on board, we are simultaneously investing in a more modern product with more room for personal contact.¡±
KLM added that the modifications to its cabins on long-haul aircraft are set to be implemented from 2027.
Other changes include a new ¡°service formula¡± in economy, which will see hot meals served faster and the reintroduction of a welcome drink for passengers.
